WORDPRESS WEBSITE TUTORIAL -GET STARTED

Welcome – Let’s get started

Ok… You’ve decided you want to give WordPress a shot on and go through process of setting up your site on your own.  Here is a list of the things that you’ll need to have in order to proceed forward with the course.

1 – Domain & Host –  Purchase Hosting

If you do not have a domain and hosting already you’ll need to purchase these.  This is the location and address of where your website will be built.

It’s very easy to set things up and get started.

Step 1:  SiteGround Hosting – Click Here

In general, I would recommend the StartUp package.  It’s a fair package to build your brand on.  Click get started and complete the sign-up process.

Already have a Domain

If you already have a domain simply select the “I already have a domain” radio box and type your domain.  You will then need to go to where your domain is located and change the DNS to match SiteGround (DNS Server name will vary depending on your SiteGround server)

Do not have a Domain

If you DO NOT have a domain, you will need to decide on one.  A domain name is an address to your personal website! There is only one Internet so there can only be one domain name registered with that spelling in the whole world.

Domains are not case-sensitive and can be used with dashes (-) or underscore (_). There is a growing list of extensions that can be registered, such as .co, .net, .org, .gov, but the most popular and memorable is the .com, so we suggest sticking to a .com first and adding the others at a later date.

We recommend something that is similar to your business name ( i.e. www.brandmentors.com or even www.thebrandmentors.com)

Oftentimes you’ll find that your preferred domain is taken simply another word like the or a city name to make a little more generic to fit your preferred name.

They will prompt you and ask you for an account, client (you), payment, and purchase information.  Here are a few tips to help through that process:

Hosting Services
Plan:  Startup
Location:  Chicago (or whatever it defaults to)
Period: 12-36 Months (if you have the finances I would recommend longer, it is MUCH cheaper)
Extra Services:  SG Site Scanner (If you have the finances I would recommend keeping it active but IS NOT required)

Simply submit your payment and you’ll be redirected to your new account.

2 – INSTALLING WORDPRESS

Installing WordPress is the first step to get your new website set up within your hosting.

2 – WORDPRESS SETTINGS

Setting up WordPress settings is the SECOND step to get your new website set up within your hosting.

3 – INSTALL YOUR THEME

Since I pulled this out of one of my course I actually continue talking about what theme they are supposed to use and it goes in depth of how to use it. For this tutorial purpose, i’m going to add a few extra photos for you to follow to install your theme.  From there you can use your theme documentation to customize your site and publish your new site.

Step 1:  Click appearance in the side menu.

Step 2:  Click Add New towards the top next to the word “Themes”
